Smartphones continue to improve performance and multi-functionality, but with the limited internal space, chief designers are having difficulties keeping up.
When using an organic electroluminescent (EL) display, the profiles of the driver IC, chip components, and all the electronic components including connectors need to be lowered at the same time, or the benefits of the thin organic EL display cannot be achieved.
The FH64MA Series connector is the result of the exhaustive pursuit of super low profile and space-saving (0.5 mm height, 0.25 mm contact pitch, 3.15 mm depth). Featuring a height of only 0.5 mm, this FPC connector saves internal space and contributes to a thinner end product profile.
Designed to Achieve High Performance and Reduced Thickness (Evolved Display Connection)
Due to the high performance and multi-functionality of modern smartphones, mounting space on the main board is more limited than ever. Changing the display connection method is a typical example of how to deal with this issue. Companies are shifting their strategy from “(1) connecting the display and touchscreen to the main board” to “(2) using a relay connection to connect the touchscreen to the display.”
However, when changing to “(2) using a relay connection to connect the touchscreen to the display,” there are driver IC and chip parts in the connector vicinity, so a low profile connector matching the heights of those parts is required. The FH64MA Series FPC connector aligns perfectly with the height of those components (up to 0.55 mm). There are several FPCs on the main board, but thanks to the FH64MA Series connector’s super low profile feature, it can be mounted in the narrow dead space between FPCs and main board, for an efficient utilization of space.

Double locks prevent FPCs from coming loose (high FPC retention force)
When locked, the metal locking tabs catch the FPC tabs, and the sharp edge on the lower contact beam presses into the FPC stiffener. These two design features ensure excellent FPC retention force. FPC retention force in the horizontal direction is 6.4 N with 11 positions.
